Apple today released a new version of macOS Monterey 12.4, designed for the upcoming M2 Macs, with build number 21F2092 of the new software and limited to new devices, so existing Mac users won’t see the update.

The macOS Monterey 12.4 update can be downloaded to all eligible Mac devices using the Software Update section of System Preferences. No user currently owns an “M2” Mac, but the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the “M2” chip will be available for order tonight and will begin shipping to customers on Friday, June 24.

Apple’s original macOS Monterey 12.4 release added support for the new Studio Display 15.5 firmware, updated the podcast app, and rolled out the official release of Universal Controls. There are currently no supplemental updates for the M2 Mac included.

According to Apple, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is powered by a new M2 chip. This chip builds on the groundbreaking strength of the M1 chip and kicks off the second generation of Apple’s chips. The M2 chip delivers unmatched performance in a compact design, supports up to 24GB of high-speed unified memory, ProRes acceleration, and up to 20 hours of battery life.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 chip joins the more powerful 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips to make up the most powerful lineup of Mac notebooks to date.
