Edge browser 102 quietly updates three features

As the development focus of Win11 has shifted from 22H2 to 23H2, some system-level components have also been gradually updated. Recently, Microsoft Edge was officially upgraded to the official version 102. Although the official did not publicize it, we can still dig out a lot of different changes. What are there? Let’s watch it together.

Video real-time subtitles

Win11 22H2 has added a new real-time subtitle function, which can only be used for local video. In the new version of Microsoft Edge, this feature has begun to be officially applied to online videos.

Click ” Settings – Accessibility – Assisted Subtitles ” to see the newly added “Live Subtitles (Preview)” switch. When this feature is turned on, Edge will render subtitles when it detects that there is a video (audio) playing on a webpage.

In general, it has the same root as Win11’s real-time subtitle function, and it is almost the same in speed and translation quality, which is very good.

Unfortunately, like the system’s live captioning feature, this feature in Edge currently only supports English . Therefore, at most, those “raw meat parties” are cheaper, but as Microsoft gradually increases multilingual support, I believe that the prospect of this feature will be broader.

Variable refresh rate

A long time ago, Win11 supported variable refresh rate technology. A balance between power and fluency is achieved by letting the computer automatically change between 60Hz and high refresh rates (eg: 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, etc.). And this time around, variable refresh rates are starting to appear in Microsoft Edge.

To experience this feature, first make sure your computer supports variable refresh rate technology (display refresh rate higher than 120Hz, WDDM 3.0). By entering “edge://flags/” in the address bar, searching for “Boost”, and setting ” Boost screen refresh rate when scrolling ” to “Enable”, you can turn on the variable refresh rate feature of the new version of Edge.

At present, this function of Edge is mainly used for page scrolling, that is, a low refresh rate is used when reading text, and a high refresh rate is used when the page is scrolled. On the one hand, this design can make the page scroll more smoothly, and on the other hand, it can also make the computer last longer.

New UI

Edge’s UI design has always been the focus of everyone’s complaints. After all, Win11 has been released for a long time, and this UI is still the Win10 style of the year. But starting from this version, we can finally open the new Win11 UI.

The new UI is designed with the Mica effect, so an obvious change is that the overall color is brighter. At the same time, the new version uses a large number of rounded elements, and a large number of rounded corners can be seen in the title bar, tabs, and even favorites. Generally speaking, compared with the current version, the new UI is more modern in overall feel, and it also better matches the tone of Win11 itself.

The opening method is divided into three steps. First, open the address bar, enter “edge://flags/” to enter the experimental function panel, then search for “show experimental”, and set ” Show experimental appearance settings ” to “Enable”.

After restarting Edge, continue to open “Settings – Appearance”, check “Show Windows 11 visual effects in title bar and toolbar (preview)” and “Use rounded corner browser tabs (preview)” on the right. After restarting the browser, the new UI takes effect.

It should be noted here that since the new UI is not compatible with the previous browser theme, you need to change the “Theme” to “Default” first, otherwise you will not be able to see the effect.

Write at the end

In general, after the version number broke the 100 integer mark, Edge began to exert its strength again. Especially in matching with system functions, the new version shows a more friendly situation. At present, these functions can be experienced in the official version (102.0.1245.39), and interested friends may wish to try it.
