Google updates Chrome password manager to unify Android data

Google is updating its Chrome Password Manager to work more smoothly on devices running the Android mobile operating system. In a blog post on Thursday, the search giant said the update will provide a single password settings page so people can sync and save passwords between the Chrome web browser and Android devices.

Password managers can help people create and save secure passwords for websites and applications, alleviating the burden of remembering multiple passwords, or habitually using the same password multiple times.

In addition to the updated password manager, Google will let people using its Password Checker know if their passwords are weak or reused, and will also let people using its Chrome browser know if their passwords have been compromised.

The search giant said the password management system is currently only available to users using the Chrome browser.

Users of the Chrome browser on Apple’s iOS mobile operating system can set the browser to automatically fill in passwords for apps and websites. Chrome will also suggest strong passwords and sync automatically if iOS users choose Chrome as their password autofill provider.

Google isn’t the only browser maker to offer a free built-in password manager. Mozilla’s Firefox and Microsoft’s Edge offer similar features. Paid password managers like Bitwarden and LastPass are also gaining popularity.

Currently, the Chrome browser is the most popular browser in the world with nearly 65% market share. Google uses the data collected by the Chrome browser to sell ads. Compared with a year ago, Google’s first-quarter ad revenue rose 22% to $54.7 billion.

Android is the most popular mobile operating system in the world, accounting for 71% of the market. Android is free, which has helped its popularity among device makers.
