Tesla cars will scan for potholes and automatically adjust suspension heights

Tesla confirmed in the latest software update that its vehicles will support scanning rough roads, such as potholes, and adjusting the suspension height to avoid damage to the vehicle.

Back in 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla Autopilot would support detecting potholes and making mini-maps to remember and avoid them. In the latest 2022.20 software update, Tesla finally mentioned the feature, according to Electrek. There is a new feature of the “Tesla Adaptive Suspension” system in the release notes:

Tesla Adaptive Suspension will adjust ride height for the rough road ahead. The feature will download rough roadmap data generated by Tesla vehicles, and this adjustment may be made in different locations, depending on the situation.

Tesla also explained in the update how to activate the feature, and it doesn’t work with Autopilot or FSD:

For comfort, the center console will indicate when the suspension is raised. To enable this feature, tap Controls > Suspension > Adaptive Suspension Damping, then select the Comfort or Auto setting.

As such, the feature will only be available on Tesla vehicles with adaptive suspensions, such as the new Model S and Model X. Electrek said the update also includes a green light chime to prevent driver distraction, a feature that is only available on Tesla vehicles equipped with Hardware 3.0.
