Twitter starts testing CoTweets feature that allows users to co-write tweets

Social media giant Twitter has confirmed to TechCrunch that the company has begun testing a new “CoTweets” feature that allows users to co-author tweets. This feature is now available for select accounts in the U.S., Canada, and South Korea. The company said it is testing CoTweets for a limited time to see how people will use the feature.

“We’re continuing to explore new ways for people to collaborate on Twitter,” a Twitter spokesperson said. “We’re testing CoTweets for a limited time to see how people and brands can use the feature to grow and reach new audiences and strengthen their collaboration with other accounts.”

Users who can use CoTweets will see the feature appear in the tweet editor via a pop-up window that invites them to “tweet together with CoTweets.” Twitter notes that users can invite another account to share ownership of a tweet with them. If they accept, a CoTweet will be created showing that both of you are co-authors.

If a user chooses someone to share ownership of a tweet with, they will receive a request that they can choose to accept or decline. Users can send CoTweet invites to people who follow them and have a public account. In addition, since only two authors can appear on the title of a CoTweet at the same time, each CoTweet can only invite one co-author.

Twitter says that if a user receives and accepts an invitation to a CoTweet, but later changes his mind and doesn’t want to be a co-author of that CoTweet, he or she can revoke the CoTweet after it’s posted. The CoTweet will then be a regular tweet by the original author.

Considering Twitter says it’s testing the feature for a limited time, it’s clear that the company wants to see how people use CoTweet, and then tweak and refine the feature before rolling it out to all users. At the conclusion of this experiment, Twitter said it may turn off the feature and any CoTweets that have been created may be deleted.

Twitter has been developing the CoTweets feature for a while. The feature was first dug out of the app’s code by mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who shared references he found back in December 2021 that suggested Twitter was working on a way to make two people a single tweet The method of the co-authors.

The new addition of CoTweets is another sign that Twitter is considering how to use its platform differently than as a virtual town square or real-time news network. This new feature may also be useful for creators who want to showcase their branded deals with companies.

However, there are a few other use cases for the CoTweets feature besides branded deals. It can be used to publish a joint statement of an organization, business, or individual, or to promote work with multiple authors or creators, such as a podcast, newsletter, or news article. It can also be used for entertainment by those who want to collaborate on Twitter.
