Several Ubisoft games removed from Steam, online services and DLC closed

Ubisoft has offline several older games from Steam, including Assassin’s Creed: Liberation HD, Space Redemption, Anno 2070 and Hunter Snorkel 5: Battle of the Atlantic Wait.

Ubisoft issued an announcement last week, saying that it will close the online services and DLC functions of 15 old games, including this batch of games that have been removed from the shelves.

It is worth mentioning that the servers of Ubisoft games are often notoriously unstable. It now appears that Ubisoft is intent on shutting down more servers, and they also released an overview highlighting that some of these games and their online services will be shutting down on September 1, 2022.

“Closing online services for some older games allows us to focus our resources on delivering a great experience for players who are playing newer or more popular titles,” Ubisoft said.

Of course, it is not incomprehensible to shut down the online business of such an old game, but the core problem at present is that Ubisoft is also cutting off access to the DLC that users already own, causing controversy among the player community.

In fact, there have been similar precedents before. As early as last July, “Might and Magic 10” had DRM encryption failure after the online service was closed, and it could not be started smoothly. Ubisoft simply removed it from Steam. Fortunately, the bug that could not be played was fixed in October, and it was re-listed on Steam.

In addition, at present Ubisoft has only removed the Steam version from the PC side, while its own store is selling it normally. Therefore, some foreign media believe that this move is likely to be caused by Ubisoft to prevent the occurrence of hard-to-fix bugs after the online service is closed, resulting in a large number of negative reviews (After all, the Ubisoft Mall does not have a scoring function), so it will be removed from the third-party platform for the sake of insurance. Ubisoft announced that the following games will be retired from online services starting September 1:

  • Anno 2070 (2011): Multiplayer, linked accounts, online features
  • Assassin’s Creed II (2009): Multiplayer, linked accounts, online features
  • Assassin’s Creed III (2012): Multiplayer, linked accounts, online features, access to DLC
