Tesla AI chief Andrej Karpathy announced resignation

Tesla artificial intelligence (AI) business head Andrej Karpathy announced Wednesday that he will no longer work for Tesla. Previously, he led the development of Tesla’s Autopilot system.

Karpas announced his departure on Twitter. “Having been honored to help Tesla move towards its goals for the past 5 years, leaving was a difficult decision. Along the way, the Autopilot system has grown from its original lane-keeping feature to city streets, and I look forward to seeing additional The strong Autopilot team continues this momentum,” he said.

At Tesla, Karpas manages a team of senior machine learning scientists and engineers and recently took a few months off. His departure comes amid a spike in Autopilot-related accidents. Tesla vehicles have accounted for nearly 70 percent of reported crashes involving advanced driver assistance systems since June 2021, according to federal data released last month.

Officials cautioned that the data was incomplete and was not intended to indicate which automaker’s system might be the safest. Tesla CEO Elon Musk thanked Karpas for his contributions and said he was honored to work with him.
