The Bluetooth LE Audio standard has been finalized and is ready for Android 13

The Bluetooth LE Audio standard is the fruit of some advances in wireless audio technology to offer users improvements such as greater energy efficiency, better audio quality, and the ability to connect multiple devices to the same audio source.

These new features were yet to be introduced in 2020, but the pandemic delayed the development process. Finally, the organization overseeing the development of the Bluetooth standards (Bluetooth SIG) has announced the completion of the Bluetooth LE Audio standard and all its components.

Bluetooth SIG says we will likely see the first prototypes of the devices being developed with these new specifications in the coming months.

The Bluetooth LE Audio standard has been finalized and is already supported by Android 13

One of the main aspects of Bluetooth LE Audio is improving efficiency. The Verge notes that one of the main features, the LC3 codec, is designed to be much more efficient in the way it delivers audio to a device, allowing the user to achieve slightly improved sound at about half the bit rate. required than before, thus using less power, maintaining the same bit rate and drastically improving audio quality.

Another important feature of the Bluetooth LE Audio standard is Auracast which will allow multiple audio devices to be paired to the same source device to allow multiple users to listen to music or audio simultaneously on different wearables similar to how users connect currently to a Wi-Fi network.

Support for the Bluetooth LE Audio standard was added in Android 13 Beta 2 and despite being in its infancy, this is a great achievement for Android 13. While current generation devices may not be able to take full advantage of the new Bluetooth standard, devices with Android 13 pre-installed likely will.
