Chrome desktop version testing a more detailed new version of the PWA installation dialog

Progressive Web Applications (PWAs for short) have become more common on some websites in recent years. For old users of the desktop Chrome browser, the pop-up window installed by the current PWA application should not be unfamiliar. Unfortunately, the current information that this pop-up window can present is still quite limited. However, in the latest Canary development branch, we have foreseen its latest changes.

As shown in the figure, if a site wants users to download and install a PWA application, the browser will pop up such a dialog box somewhere on the screen. Meanwhile, the Android/Mobile version of Chrome has been actively tweaked over the past year so that users can more accurately see what’s currently being installed.

At this stage, the desktop version of the Chrome browser only displays the application icon and name in the PWA installation pop-up window but lacks other important information. The latest changes hidden in the Chrome Canary early adopter channel have been able to display more detailed product descriptions in the PWA installation pop-up window.

Interested friends can refer to the following method to enable the new version of the PWA installation pop-up window style for the desktop Chrome browser:

  • If it is already open, please close all open Chrome processes first.
  • Right-click on the desktop icon and add the following content to the ‘target’ path on its ‘properties’ page.
  • Add –enable-features=DesktopPWAsDetailedInstallDialog after the chrome.exe executable file
  • Restart the Chrome browser through the modified desktop shortcut.
  • Visit any site that supports PWA, such as Twitter.com.
  • Click the ‘install’ icon on the address bar, and then you can see a more detailed description of the PWA application installation.
