Samsung Galaxy only charges to 85 percent (Solution)

In recent weeks, we have surprisingly often received the question: ‘help, my Samsung charges to 85 percent, and no further, is it broken?’ The problem invariably pops up after performing a software update. But more importantly: the flaw is not a flaw at all.

Since the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3, last year, Samsung has rolled out a pinch to a large number of phones and tablets. This gadget should ensure that the life of your battery – and therefore of your phone or tablet – is considerably extended. The last part of a charging cycle is the most taxing for the battery. And so, Samsung though, it should be possible to just skip this.

The result is the Protect Battery feature. If it is turned on, your Galaxy will charge up to 85 percent, and no further. It is not clear to us why this switches on spontaneously during an update. But it happened to a lot of users, especially lately.

If you think it’s a good idea to reduce the load on your Galaxy’s battery, you can of course leave Battery Protect turned on. Finally, with the growing lifespan of smartphones – think of Samsung’s own new update policy with five years of software support for devices such as the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21 (FE), Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy A53 and A33 – also the load on the battery.

Turn off (or turn on) battery protection

That does not alter the fact that most simply want to charge their phones 100 percent full. Especially if you have a long day ahead of you, that’s a nice idea, after all. And so you can easily disable Battery Protect (or enable it, of course).

In Settings, go to Battery & Device Care, and choose Battery. Then tap More battery settings at the bottom, where you can simply turn off Protect Battery. Or enable it, if you do want to use the function.
