Xiaomi fined 21.76 million yuan by the Italian agency

Xiaomi was fined 3.2 million euros (about 21.76 million yuan) in Italy. Italy’s competition watchdog said the smartphone maker refused to repair the phone’s main problem when the product (still covered by warranty) showed scratches or other minor defects.

The Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) said on Friday that Xiaomi Technology Italia Ltd had compromised the rights of consumers by making “warranty services subject to the repair of damages beyond the scope of the warranty”.

The Italian regulator said Xiaomi’s Italian operations are also charging customers after determining that products are free of defects or problems, noting that the company should instead verify the presence of potential defects and return products without charge, including shipping and verification fee. Xiaomi did not respond to a request for comment.
