Pixel 6a enhances Magic Eraser feature

Google rolled out a very clever Magic Eraser feature on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. This image editing feature is used to remove unwanted objects from the photo background. While the feature is easy to use and removes it well, Google has no plans to open it up to other Android phones at this stage.

On the Pixel 6a released recently, Google has enhanced the Magic Eraser function on the existing basis, and said that it will also feed back to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in the future. On top of the standard eraser tool, Google has introduced a new feature called Camouflage, which is equally easy to use and makes the result look better in the background.

Magic Eraser functions somewhat like Photoshop’s content-aware fill. The user selects an area, and information from the images surrounding the area is used to remove unwanted objects and fill them in.

For some objects, especially if there is a clear separation between the object and other objects in the photo, the final rendering will be better. And these pictures are viewed on a small screen like a mobile phone, so the effect is still good. But if the object you want to remove has more overlap with other elements in the image, the end result is not very good. So sometimes the object cleanup achieved by this feature can look odd.

And that’s exactly what Camouflage’s new features try to solve. Rather than trying to remove unwanted objects from the background of the picture, this feature reduces the saturation to bring out the center area more. For example, in the demo below, after enabling this feature, the purple stroller in the background will turn gray.

Simply put, Magic Eraser erases an object in a photo, and Camouflage further highlights the center object by desaturating objects in the background. In another picture comparison, you can see that the green high foot in the background of the picture can be distracting because it has multiple overlaps in the background, so using the Magic Eraser function is not very good, and Camouflage is reduced by reducing the effect. Saturation turns the bar stools brown and accentuates the subject of the photo even more.
