Duplex functioned by training against your site to enable Google Assistant to perform certain actions regularly. Password resetting was a useful feature. Due to feedback from developers and users, Google is removing Duplex from its online presence. Additionally, it is doing so to focus fully on making AI advancements to the Duplex voice technology that helps people the most every day.
The implication is that Duplex on the Web wasn’t used as compared to the voice version that handled phone calls. Duplex powers the popular Hold for Me and Direct My Call features on Pixel phones. These features let you tap instead of using the actual dial pad when on a phone tree. Google also uses voice technology to check product inventory and store hours.
In the short term, this reprioritization of Duplex makes sense due to the continued prevalence of phone-only interactions. However, in the future, everything will have a web version, so having an assistant who can handle those tasks would be extremely useful.
