Samsung Introduces the Galaxy Z Flip 5

Samsung has unveiled its latest addition to the popular Galaxy Z Flip series, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, during an Unpacked event in Seoul. This new foldable phone sets a new standard for the series, showcasing innovative design ideas and several notable enhancements.

Refining the Foldable Experience

TM Roh, the President, and Head of the Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung, expressed how the company is revolutionizing the mobile industry with foldable devices by consistently refining the user experience. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a testament to this commitment to refinement.

Sleeker Design with Gapless Hinge

For the first time in the flip phone’s history, Samsung introduces a gapless hinge design with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. This novel hinge eliminates the space between the folding halves, resulting in a slimmer profile. Compared to its predecessors, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 measures just 15.1mm in thickness when folded shut, down from 15.9mm.

Enhanced Cover Screen – Flex Window

The most significant talking point of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is its upgraded cover screen, now expanded to a 3.4-inch AMOLED panel, dubbed the “Flex Window.” This larger display enables new use cases and personalization options. The Flex Window introduces new widgets, a Multi Widget View, quick access to settings, chat and call logs, and even Quick Reply with a full QWERTY keyboard. Moreover, it integrates Samsung Wallet features like QR codes, coupons, membership cards, passes, digital keys, and more.

Camera Capabilities

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 boasts a 10MP selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture and an 85-degree FOV. On the cover screen side, two cameras are situated. The wide sensor has a 12MP resolution, an f/1.8 aperture, Dual Pixel Auto Focus, Optical Image Stabilization, and an 83-degree FOV. Alongside it, the 12MP ultra-wide camera features an f/2.2 aperture and a 123-degree FOV.

Powerful Specifications and New One UI Version

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with an IPX8 water resistance rating and an Armor Aluminum frame, ensuring durability. The enhanced Flex Hinge with a dual rail structure diffuses external impacts, providing added protection. Hardware-wise, the phone features a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover screen with a 60Hz refresh rate and a 720 x 748 resolution. When unfolded, it reveals a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X foldable display with a resolution of 2640 x 1080 and an adaptive refresh rate of 1-120Hz.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, 8GB of RAM, and either 256GB or 512GB of storage. It houses a 3,700mAh dual battery with 25W fast charging, wireless charging, and Wireless PowerShare capabilities. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 runs on the new One UI 5.1.1, designed to enhance productivity and multitasking, particularly for larger-screen devices.

Customization and Self-Expression

Samsung positions the Galaxy Z Flip 5 as “the ultimate pocketable self-expression tool without compromise.” This is due, in part, to the seamless integration of the cover screen with other devices and accessories. The Flipsuit Case for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 includes a changeable NFC card, allowing users to match their Flex Window design with the case design for personalized self-expression. Furthermore, Galaxy Watch 6 users can enjoy more customization options through the Flex Window, displaying graphical clocks that match the smartwatch’s face design.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 are available in various markets, with the device hitting the shelves on August 11. The phone comes in attractive colors like Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender, along with exclusive online colors such as Gray, Blue, Green, and Yellow.
