Chrome for Android red arrow bug displaying unneeded beta update prompt

Chrome for Android users have reported an issue with a red arrow prompt urging them to update the browser, even when a new version is not yet available.

The problem seems to affect Android devices running versions 13 and 14. Users have noticed a red arrow appearing in the top-right corner, including on Chrome’s New Tab Page. Upon tapping the arrow, an overflow menu opens, displaying an “Update Chrome” message indicating the availability of a “Newer version.”

Typically, this message is used by Google to encourage users to install updates when they are a few versions behind to ensure they have access to the latest features and security patches.

As of now, tapping on the prompt directs users to the Chrome Beta Play Store listing, despite them already being on the latest stable release (version 115.0.5790.166), which was released yesterday and is currently being rolled out.

Interestingly, there is no beta channel update, and even if users install Chrome as a second browser, the red arrow update warning persists in the overflow menu.

Google is likely to address and resolve this issue promptly. In the meantime, users need not take any specific action, as there are no imminent threats to their devices or data.
