Windows 10 21H1 file explorer new version touch UI and icons first look

Windows Latest pointed out that despite years of development, we have seen many changes on the Windows 10 operating system, but the file explorer has remained basically unchanged. If the previous dark mode update is not included, there is not much difference in technical principles from the old version more than ten years ago. The good news is that Microsoft is about to bring a refreshed user experience to the majority of Windows 10 devices through the Sun Valley update in the second half of 2021.

First, Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 21H2 will introduce an improved file explorer. From the appearance point of view, it is more deeply integrated into the company’s Fluent design language, and we can get a glimpse of the new version of the UI on the latest technology preview.

As we all know, File Explorer allows users to browse through the folders and files on the computer, and Windows 10 21H1 not only improves the layout of the desktop version by default but also introduces a more touch-friendly interface for the tablet mode.

Now, Microsoft plans to enable touch-friendly UI for everyone by default, even if you are using a mouse. On the basis of traditional appearance elements, it has injected more filling elements.

When using the touch screen, users can easily navigate between the different tab pages of the file explorer. When the display resolution of the device is changed, the relevant fill level will also be automatically adjusted to better align with the modern XAML experience.

In addition, Windows 10 File Explorer will also introduce a new version of the icon style, but unfortunately, it does not provide a preview of the file types stored in this folder. Of course, if you still like the old board style, you can still enable the switch in the “View Options” window (select “Use the compact mode”).

As you can see from the screenshots, Microsoft has also refreshed icons for almost all folders and elements related to it, including downloading documents, pictures, videos, music, and other folders.

However, compared with the previous yellow and blue main colors, Windows 10 21H1 does choose a different color scheme for various elements of the file explorer, which further enhances the concentration of the Fluent design language.

Finally, the recycle bin, Windows operation, settings, and even diagrams of floppy disks that have disappeared from the consumer’s sight for many years have all been reshaped through the Fluent design language.

It is expected that later this year, Microsoft will also adjust and update the UI of all major interfaces of Windows 10, such as the “Action Center” and “Start Menu”, and enable rounded corner elements for windows, menus and panels.
