Google is making a major upgrade to the direction interface in Google Maps

Google is announcing the preparation of new vinyl features for Google Maps. The biggest highlight is the introduction of a new tool to help better realize indoor navigation and environmental driving route recommendations. However, the features announced today are not all launched at the same time. We can only see previews of many features, and it is not clear when some features will be launched in which regions of the world.

One of the biggest changes is that Google will bring its Live View augmented reality direction to the scenes of airports, transportation stations and shopping malls. The Live View orientation allows you to lift your phone, point the camera at the world around you, and then follow the arrows and icons to point to where you need to go. Previously, they could only work outdoors.

But disappointingly, these indoor AR directions have not been widely promoted: now they are only available in some shopping malls in Chicago, Long Island, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. However, Google will launch indoor Live View navigation in some transportation stations, airports and shopping malls in Tokyo and Zurich in the next few months, and more cities are “on the road.”

Google also plans to transform the navigation interface for selecting transportation modes on Android and iOS systems. Previously, you had to switch between different tabs to see more details of different modes of transportation, but with this new interface, you only need to scroll through the list. The company said that the map can even prioritize the modes you like and put those that are popular in certain cities (such as the subway in New York City) on a higher list. This new interface will be launched globally in the next few months.

In addition to the direct interface, Google will also add a new driving route, which is optimized for reducing fuel consumption. If the ETA of the environmentally friendly route is similar to the route to the fastest place, Google Maps will default to the fuel-efficient route, but users can still change their preferences in the settings. Google plans to provide these new fuel-saving routes on Android and iOS systems in the United States later this year and to provide them globally in the future. The specific time is undetermined.

The fuel-saving route is not the only environmental update on the map. Google also plans to launch a reminder feature to tell you when you will pass through a low-emission zone, which does not allow vehicles with certain emission levels to enter. Google said that these alerts will be launched on Android and iOS systems in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom in June this year, and more countries will receive these alerts soon.

Google is also working on new weather and air quality map layer, which will be launched on Android and iOS in the next few months. Google plans to launch a weather layer on a global scale, and first to launch an air quality layer in Australia, India, and the United States.

Google also plans to pilot a new grocery pick-up tool at some branches of Kroger’s grocery store Fred Meyer in Portland, Oregon this summer. This tool allows you to share your location and arrival time with the store via Google Maps so that your grocery order can be ready when you arrive.
