Spotify iOS app hints at new developments in Car Thing accessories

Since 2019, Spotify has been committed to creating a “Car Thing” voice assistant that can enhance the music and podcast experience. After a long period of silence, we found Car Thing in a file of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Now, MacRumors has found several photos related to Car Thing in the Spotify application code.

But the new version has been replaced by a larger rectangular screen, closer to intelligent design on the phone, and there is a large knob that has a small button. Although it is not clear what the knobs and buttons do, the FCC files have described Car Thing as “a phone with a screen and buttons/a voice control accessory that supports Spotify App”.

The device can communicate with the vehicle host through a Bluetooth connection and supply power through a 12V socket. In addition, the App contains photos of various accessories, indicating that the Car Thing can be connected to the dashboard or the location of the air-conditioning outlet.

Unfortunately, the official only called it a test device to help the company better understand how people listen to music and podcasts, and there is no plan to provide consumers with actual products.

Even so, Spotify has continued to improve the device in the past two years, which means that we still hope to see the arrival of the retail version of Car Thing one day in the future. Finally, as the company accelerated the pace of launching its Anchor podcast creation tool, MacRumors also found code for paid subscriptions and commenting in the Spotify App.
