Facebook is making it easier to export posts to third-party services

Facebook today launched a new feature that allows users around the world to choose to archive the posts and notes they create on social media sites and transfer copies of these data to Google Docs, WordPress, or Blogger. This is an extension of a similar tool that the company released last year. For example, the tool allows users to transfer photos from their platform to Google Photos.

In both cases, the tool allows users who leave Facebook to save a version of the content associated with their account. Users can access the tool by opening Facebook settings, clicking “Your Facebook information”, and then selecting “Transfer a copy of your information”. There you can choose which destination (Google Docs, WordPress or Blogger) to transfer the data to, log in to the selected account, and then confirm the transfer.

The new feature is part of the “Data Transfer Project”, a cross-company data sharing program launched in 2018 with the goal of allowing users to seamlessly transfer data across various online services and platforms. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Twitter also participated in the project and provided similar data export tools.

This feature is very convenient for users who want to share specific posts or notes they created through Facebook. However, it should be noted that the migrated data will not archive the comments of other users, because these comments will be treated as belonging to a separate account.

The new data export tool helps align Facebook with the two recent technology regulatory laws California’s Consumer Privacy Act and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. Both laws require companies to provide personal information in a readily available format when requested, but the specific format and interoperability measures are not stated.
