Samsung Galaxy S21: 7 things you want to change immediately

You just got your Samsung Galaxy S21? Once you’ve set it up and transferred all your apps and data with SmartSwitch, there are a few things you’ll want to do right away, as they make using the S21 much more enjoyable. We list them here for you.

Side Key Settings

By default, you will see Bixby if you hold down the power button of the Samsung Galaxy S21, the S21 Plus, or the S21 Ultra for a long time. Still, there is a lot more possible with that side key, and there are also custom gestures for when you press the button twice.

If you want to ban Bixby and see, for example, the old power menu when you press the button for a long time, you can make adjustments in the ‘Settings for the side key’ menu. Swipe down from the home screen, then press the power button on the top of the screen. then the power menu will appear and at the bottom press Settings for the side key. You can then adjust the actions of the side key to your heart’s content.

Activate 120 Hz

If you buy a phone from the S21 series, you do so because, among other things, Samsung has had one of the best screens in the industry for years. In other words, you want to make full use of the screen, and you do that by turning on the 120 Hz refresh rate in the settings.

A higher refresh rate ensures that images are smoother and the screen simply looks better. Once you use 120 Hz, you don’t want to go back to 60 Hz. Admittedly, the phone will consume a little more in return, but you are happy to add that. Go to Settings> Display> Smooth motion> High refresh rate (120 Hz).

Display Battery Percentage

By default, you will not see the remaining percentage of the battery on your Samsung phone. If you want to know exactly, you have to swipe down every time and that is far from useful. Fortunately, you can have the percentage displayed at any time. Go to Settings> Notifications> Advanced settings> Show battery percentage.

Turn on Gestures

When using your Samsung phone for the first time, by default you will see the home button along with the back button and Recent apps. Although you can also choose to use the gesture navigation that has been active since Android 10. In the beginning, that operation takes some getting used to, but chances are that you will not want to do without it afterward. Go to Settings > Display > Navigation bar and choose Full-screen gestures.

Select Google Discover

Samsung lets you choose between Samsung Daily and Google Discover with the Galaxy S21. The latter shows you relevant news items, and it has been a popular feature on Pixel phones for years. To use Google Discover, long press an empty space on the home screen, then swipe right a few times to get to the left panel and select Google Discover.

Customize Edge Windows

You have probably already noticed that there is a nice bar on the right of the start screen. Well, those are the Edge windows or a bar that gives you quick access to useful apps and features from any screen. Quickly open the calculator or call your partner? That can be done in a flash.

Nevertheless, there is a good chance that you would like to make some changes to your Edge windows. For example, you can set Edge windows to give quick access to your clipboard or let you take a screenshot yourself. Although there will also be many users who do not want Edge windows at all and want to disable the feature.

You can adjust all these things by swiping Edge windows to the left on the home screen and then tapping the gear. you can also tap the pencil icon if you only want to change the apps displayed.

Disable Ads

Samsung would like to earn an extra penny by displaying advertisements in the notification panel in which it highlights its own services.

Even more adjustments

Of course, there are a lot more settings you could check out after setting up your phone. Many functions are a matter of personal preferences. Take dark mode for example, which is a very interesting feature, but it is not for everyone. You could also make a lot of changes to the keyboard or activate the ‘One-handed operation’, depending on whether you have a smaller S21 or the large S21 Ultra.
