Disney announces that its streaming service Disney+ has 103.6 million subscribers

According to the reports, Disney said in its fiscal Q2 report on Thursday that as of April 3, Disney+ subscribers had grown to 103.6 million, compared with only 33 million a year ago. Since the beginning of this year, the company has added 8.7 million members. During this period, the company’s first Marvel original series Wanda Vision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier were first on the service for the first time.

In contrast, Netflix, the world’s largest subscription video service, has accumulated more than 207 million global users in the more than a decade since it started streaming services. Disney+ has launched a year and a half ago. But the latest growth marks a deceleration after Disney+’s explosive growth in its first year. Compared with the previous three months, the number of Disney+ users in the latest quarter increased by 9.2%. However, the continuous growth of Disney+ has been very strong before, and it has grown by 29% and 28% in the previous two quarters.

Disney+ has proven to be the most prominent success in the so-called streaming media war. In the past year and a half, it seems that every major media company (and some technology companies) has launched its own streaming video service. The growth of Disney+ far exceeds that of all-new competitors such as Apple, HBO, NBCUniversal, and Discovery. A media analyst called Disney+ “one of the greatest product launches ever.”

Moreover, the popularity of Disney+ has far exceeded Disney’s own initial expectations. The company initially expected Disney+ to reach 60 to 90 million users five years after its launch. It now estimates that Disney+ will have 230 to 260 million global users by 2024 five years after the service is launched.

However, not all Disney+ users get the same content. In Europe and India, Disney+ is bundled as part of a wider streaming service. In countries such as India, subscription prices are only a small part of the rest of the world. Disney also pointed out that Hulu’s subscribers increased to 41.6 million, and ESPN Plus membership increased to 13.8 million.
