The next-generation Surface Duo may have a built-in tripod

According to reports, Microsoft is developing a successor to the current Surface Duo, and a recent patent may allow us to learn about the new features of the device. The patent was filed on November 19, 2020, and published on May 27, 2021. The title is “Book-style foldable tablet withstand”.

Next Gen Surface Duo

The patent image shows that the bracket will become part of the hinge and allow the device to support the device at different angles, which is very similar to the Surface Pro. The patent shows that in some embodiments, a book-type electronic device has a first part and a second part, which are hinged between them, which can be opened and closed like a traditional book.

There are display screens on the first and second parts, which display visual information to the user when the electronic device is turned on. When in the open position, the user may wish to interact with an electronic device placed on a table, desk, or another surface, without the need for the user to support the electronic device.

Expandable support is integrated into the back or hinge of the electronic device so that when the electronic device is unfolded, the support holds the electronic device in one or more positions for comfortable viewing. The expandable support has a stowed position, which can minimize the interference of the support during the handheld use of the electronic device.

In some embodiments, the electronic device includes a first part, a second part, a spine, and a bracket. The second part is movably connected to the first part by a hinge. The hinge has a hinge axis, and the spine is connected to the hinge and parallel to the hinge axis.

The support is connected to the back and has an extended position and a retracted position. The stowed position is adjacent to the spine, and the expanded position is separated from the spine to support the electronic device on a flat surface.

It is not entirely clear, Microsoft is exploring the equipment as Surface Duo or Surface Neo devices, because Microsoft repeatedly referred to a laptop rather than a smartphone. This patent shows that Microsoft continues to work hard on the form factor and is expected to fix most of the current problems before the release of the next-generation foldable Surface.
