AMD Radeon 21.8.1 graphics driver can significantly reduce 4K video decoding power consumption

AMD Radeon Adrenaline version 21.8.1 graphics driver was released on August 10th. This driver officially supports the new RX 6600 XT graphics card and fixes the bug when running the game Psychic. The new version of the driver has an additional feature that can reduce power consumption during gaming and video decoding.

Take the RX 6700 XT graphics card as an example. When playing YouTube 4K 60FPS online videos, the power consumption of the graphics card can be reduced from 30W to 18W; after the driver is updated, the power consumption of the RX 6900 XT can be reduced from 42W to 30W.

After the 21.8.1 version of the graphics card driver is updated, when playing 4K 60FPS HDR format video, the effect of power consumption reduction is not obvious. It is exactly the same as before, and a graphics card will even increase by 1W.

It also tested the power consumption when the driver is updated, when the load is low, and when multiple displays are connected. Previously, AMD RDNA 2 architecture graphics cards were criticized by users because of the power consumption of external dual 4K displays. The new version of the driver does not improve the power consumption of connecting dual monitors, but it can be found that the power consumption of the latest RX 6600 XT graphics card is significantly lower than other models, only 21W.
