Apple begins to push iOS 14.8.1 and iPadOS 14.8.1 security updates

Apple today officially released slightly updated iOS 14.8.1 and iPadOS 14.8.1 system software, bringing some security improvements to iPhone/iPad users after a month. For all eligible Apple device users, regardless of whether you have received the update push notification, the official recommendation is to manually check and obtain the OTA installation package in Settings -> General -> Software Update.

According to Apple’s official support document, compared with iOS/iPad OS 14.8 a month ago, the 14.8.1 update fixes the compatibility with Sidecar, Browser (WebKit), Voice Control (Voice Control), and Status Bar (Status Bar) and other related vulnerabilities.

Fortunately, with the exception of an IOMobileFrameBuffer (which allows applications to execute arbitrary code with kernel permissions), most of the vulnerabilities have not been widely exploited in the wild. MacRumors pointed out that Apple still adopts a two-step strategy, allowing iPhone users to choose to update iOS 15 or continue to use iOS 14 on demand.

Apple will continue to release updates for iOS 14, but the main work will be on security fixes. As for more new features, it is still limited to iOS 15.
