These custom GSIs bring Android 12 to all devices with Project Treble support

Android 12 in the stable version has been a reality for a few weeks: the release in the AOSP was followed by the release for the Google Pixel and now thanks to the first custom GSI (Generic System Image) it is possible to try the latest major release of the robot on all devices with support for Project Treble.

Modding enthusiasts will surely be with the antennas erected for the first Android 12 based custom ROMs, but the GSI (Generic System Image) is definitely a great way to experience naked and raw Android in its latest version. Also because, although various OEMs have already started their respective beta programs – just think of Samsung and OPPO -, the number of models involved is still very small.

It is Google directly to make the Android 12 Generic System Image (GSI) available on the official website and this first of all allow developers to test the compatibility of their apps with the latest APIs. The advantage of Google’s GSI AOSPs is that they can be started on any device with Project Treble support , the downside is the lack of many interesting features.

This is where the custom GSIs from XDA phhusson’s Recognized Developer come into play, which includes numerous bugfixes, but also additional functions that are not available in those released by Google. The developer has already based his Project Treble GSI project (AKA “Phh-Treble”) on Android 12 and started releasing pre-release builds with specific patches for certain devices made necessary by the latest version of Android. If you are particularly demanding and an AOSP version is not enough for you, an unofficial build of the Pixel Experience GSI is already available thanks to the Senior Member of XDA ponces. The Pixel Experience needs no introduction. It should be noted that the build linked below is based on phhusson’s custom GSI, therefore it contains the same bugs.

There are currently no A-only builds available, so it is imperative to have an A/B partitioned device. Once better levels of stability are reached, the developers will be busy with new variants. If you are interested in giving it a try, don’t forget to backup all your data first. For the procedure.
