Face recognition on Pixel 6 is not a closed chapter

In the months before the arrival of Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro, numerous rumors indicated that the new Google smartphones would arrive with face recognition, a feature that as we all know is not (yet) available for the two smartphones. In fact, as a recognized XDA developer discovered, there are some clues that reveal how the Mountain View giant intended to offer the feature but chose to put it aside for unspecified reasons.

Freak07, in a series of tweets, wrote that it had found a commit in which the Google Pixel 6 PowerHAL configuration file had been modified by the company’s engineers on July 9th. In the description of the commit reference is made to the face recognition sensor with the code name of Tuscany – evidently in honor of the splendid Italian region -, and also to some ways to better balance its impact on the battery.

Although it is not clear why Google has decided to remove support for the unlock sensor with face recognition, it is still likely that the feature will sooner or later be enabled by the company. According to some, the company would have decided to put the functionality aside for a moment for obvious reasons perhaps related to its implementation, thus focusing everything on the display’s fingerprint sensor.

Could Google enable the face recognition sensor on Google Pixel 6 in an upcoming Feature Drop? Nobody knows for sure, but it would make a nice gift from the company.
