32-bit is no longer supported, the first shot of Google’s Android 12 in-vehicle system

Android Automotive is Google’s Android-based car entertainment system operating system. Compared with Android Auto, which only projects apps and content from the mobile phone to the car, Automotive has a more independent function, with its own Play store and music playback function.

Google has recently completed based on Android 12 Automotive 12 updates, there are some interesting changes. Updates include new power policy APIs (for automakers to customize background tasks), SMS reference client, priority reminder notifications, visual indicators for microphone access, new application launchers, and two-column design applications. Android’s Toasts API is now also enabled, but only system apps can use it.

It is worth noting that Android Automotive 12 only supports 64-bit and is the first official Android version to cancel support for 32-bit platforms. Android on smartphones and tablets can still run on 32-bit devices, but Arm has announced that CPUs after 2023 will no longer support 32-bit, so the change is inevitable.

Although Android Automotive was officially launched in March 2017, it has not yet been popularized in cars, and currently, only a small number of cars are equipped. The 2021 Polestar 2 is the first car equipped with Automotive. In the past year, Cadillac, General Motors and Renault have all announced the sale of cars equipped with Automotive.

The complete update list for Android 12 Automotive can be found on the Android Source website. Google has not yet revealed when (or whether) it will push the update to cars running earlier versions of Android Automotive.
