Samsung: New Home Hub and Foundation of the Home Connectivity Alliance

As is well known, Samsung has been launching a smart home solution for a long time, which is less well known in this country than, for example, in the company’s home country or the USA. The whole thing goes by the name of Samsung SmartThings.

In addition to an open partner network, this requires an intelligent control center that can translate and orchestrate different standards. This is exactly where Samsung wants to start with the SmartThings series. The focus is on the SmartThings Hub, which takes over the control of the Smart Home centrally.

Thanks to the support of the ZigBee 3.0, Z-Wave and BLE protocols, users can wirelessly connect the hub to a variety of devices. At CES 2022 it was announced that the SmartThings Hub Software would be built into selected Samsung Smart TVs, Smart Monitors and Family Hub refrigerators. In Korea – and only there for now – they also want to offer a dedicated Samsung Home Hub (see picture at the top).

Also, Samsung, announced that it is a part of the newly formed Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) is. Samsung Electronics is a founding member of the HCA alongside Arçelik, The Electrolux Group, Haier, GE Appliances and Trane Technologies.

The alliance brings together manufacturers of connected devices to improve the compatibility of smart devices from different brands. As part of the alliance, Samsung will work with other member companies to develop common guidelines for cloud-to-cloud interoperability that take into account data security and consumer protection requirements.

For Samsung users, this means the ability to operate and control devices from other brands via the SmartThings smart home platform, making it easier for consumers to integrate old and new devices into their connected homes.

Alternatively, consumers can also access Samsung devices from other HCA member applications. It should be mentioned that Samsung is also on board with Matter. This is the standard that is likely to sound the most exciting right now for all smart home enthusiasts.
