Wear OS: Tiles should continue to spread, Google facilitates the development of practical mini apps

Google has big plans for Wear OS, including of course its own Pixel Watch. The tiles, which place information and practical features just a swipe away from the home screen or watch face, could play a greater role. Now the support for the tiles is further expanded and brought to the developer framework Glance.

At first, the Wear OS Tiles could only be used by the Google apps but were opened up to other app developers via the Tiles API last year. In order to further increase the number of tiles, the possibilities are now being expanded and support is being provided for Glance, among other things. Glance is a new framework based on JetPack that is used to develop Android apps.

Tiles are placed right next to the home screen, which is more commonly called “watch face” on the smartwatch and can be reached by swiping. You could compare it to the widgets on smartphones. With the difference that these take up the full display for reasons of space. It is used for similar purposes as the widgets and can make some apps unnecessary, especially on the smartwatch. In the above animation, you can see some examples.
