Oculus Quest 2 v37 update has a nasty bug | Fix in distribution

Oculus – better to say Meta Quest now – on January 20 last release the v37 update for the Oculus Quest 2 headset was full of news. Unfortunately, the initial enthusiasm did not last long, because the new release also brought with it an annoying bug that risks ruining the user experience.

Some users who have already received the update report chromatic aberrations, particularly evident at the edges of the graphic elements, and more generally of a worsening of sharpness. The following image is quite eloquent: on the left is the rendering with the previous software version, on the right is the one with the new version:

From a first analysis, it seems that the software algorithms that correct the so-called color fringing do not operate with the same effectiveness as the latest update. Meta per has confirmed that it has taken note of the reports and reserves the right to provide further details as soon as it reaches conclusions.

In the meantime, to avoid any problems, Oculus Quest 2 owners should avoid downloading and installing the update. Unfortunately, the only way to do this is to disconnect the viewer from the WiFi network because with the viewer switched on and connected, the update is downloaded automatically.

At least good is the fact that the distribution of each new headset software update occurs in stages, so it is likely that the buggy software version has reached only a small fraction of users and that others will receive the correct version directly.

FIX IN DISTRIBUTION

28/01

Good news: in the last few hours the distribution of a new software update for the headset has started which seems to solve the problem. Several users on Reddit report it, but there is also confirmation from Android Police colleagues.

The update is identified by version number 37.0.0.147 and will be downloaded automatically by connecting the headset to the WiFi network. You can manually search for software updates by following the path Settings> System> Software updates. From the same section, you can also check the installed version number.
