Samsung files patent for a highly versatile dual-folding Galaxy Z Fold phone

Samsung has patented a highly versatile dual-folding Galaxy Z Fold phone with a mechanism that folds in and out. However, this isn’t a Z-fold design, instead, the phone has a hinge on both the horizontal and vertical axes. Vertically, the display can be folded outwards; horizontally, the screen can be folded inwards.

That way, it’s still optimally protected when you take it with you. This is a new, unique design that creates new user possibilities. The patent was filed by Samsung Electronics with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) on July 13, 2021. The 57-page document titled “Foldable Electronic Devices” was released today (10 February 2022). The same document was filed in South Korea a year ago.

In its unfolded state, the patented Samsung phone has the same large screen area as the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, polylines are completely different. This time, the vertical polyline is placed to the left of the center. Therefore, the right part of the screen is wider than the left part.

It’s also a screen that folds out. So when you fold the phone, you get a double-sided phone with the screen portion extending through the left-hand side to the back. The triple camera system can still be used in the folded state. Since there’s also a screen on the back, you can also take selfies with the triple camera.

The Huawei Mate Xs is the only foldable model so far with the screen folded out. The downside to this is that the phone screen doesn’t remain protected from scratches and bumps when folded. However, Samsung has found a solution to this problem.

This is where the horizontal polyline comes in. This one is right in the middle and has an inward folding mechanism. Of course, you can not only fold the phone this way but also use it. This way, you can use the device as a small laptop, with the lower screen portion serving as a virtual keyboard and the upper screen portion displaying content.
