According to developer Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter could test away to subsequently withdraw from threads. So she discovered a function called “Leave this Conversation” in the background of the app. This would make it possible to remove the tag on your own username in a thread.
It would also prevent pranksters from re-tagging you again in the same thread to sort of drag you back in. You would then no longer receive notifications for the respective conversation. Of course, you could still control it manually if you wish.
Above you can see what the said function screen could look like. The difference to the existing function for muting threads is, among other things, that your Twitter name can no longer be tagged.

Your Twitter handle then only appears as plain text in the thread. For other users, this would also send a clear signal that you are not interested in staying on the ball.
Twitter has so far neither denied nor confirmed the development of such a function. Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether and when “Leave this Conversation” will be introduced.
