Apple’s self-developed chip M2 revealed: it is expected to appear in the Mac mini and surpass Intel in performance

On March 10th, Apple released the Mac Studio equipped with the M1 Ultra chip on March 8, which is the most powerful processor in the Apple M series. Compared with competing products, Apple said that the M1 Ultra is stronger than the 16-core desktop CPU, consumes 100W less power, and is 90% ahead of the i9-12900K at 60W power consumption. Compared with the RTX 3060 Ti, the GPU consumes only 1/3 of the power and is 200W lower, but the performance is stronger.

After the M1 Ultra, Apple is in full swing to prepare the M2 series of chips. Previously, industry insiders @Mobile Chip Daren said that the performance of M1 Ultra far exceeds Intel, and the performance of the M2 chip to be released in the second half of the year will surpass Intel without any suspense, which inevitably makes people look forward to Apple M2.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is working on two Mac mini devices, one with the Apple M2 chip and one with the Apple M2 Pro chip. 9to5Mac broke the news that the redesigned Mac mini is code-named J473 and is equipped with an Apple M2 chip.

This chip adopts an eight-core design and consists of four high-performance cores and four small cores. The high-performance core is code-named “Avalanche”. The core is codenamed “Blizzard” and integrates a 10-core GPU.

The other Mac mini (code-named J474) is equipped with the M2 Pro chip, which consists of 8 high-performance cores and 4 small cores, with more powerful performance.

As for the rumored M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips, Apple currently has no plans. In addition, work on the M2 version of the Mac mini is nearing completion and is expected to debut later this year, possibly at WWDC in June.
