South Korean Galaxy S22 owners file class-action lawsuit against Samsung

Thousands of South Korean users of Samsung’s first flagship smartphone model in 2022, the Galaxy S22 series, are preparing to file a class-action lawsuit against Samsung. They claim that their smartphone’s performance is degraded by the Game Optimization Service (GOS), which performs to preserve battery life and prevent overheating whether they want to or not.

The affected S22 series mobile phone users have appointed a lawyer to prepare a class-action lawsuit against Samsung Electronics. They demanded compensation of 300,000 won (about 1,541 yuan) and called more affected users online. “We bought the flagship model worth over 1 million won because we wanted the model to be worth the money,” said a Galaxy S22 user.

At the same time, these users are also encouraging users of other Samsung phones, such as the Galaxy S21, S20 Galaxy and Galaxy Tablet, to join the lawsuit because Samsung Electronics installed GOS in models other than the Galaxy S22. Galaxy users have been complaining that GOS is automatically performed when playing high-end games, resulting in poor device performance.

Meanwhile, the Korea Fair Trade Commission has begun investigating the dispute. The committee’s Seoul office received a complaint from Samsung Electronics for violating the Fair Labeling and Advertising Act with respect to GOS. The FTC is expected to conduct an initial investigation into the issue before deciding to launch a formal investigation.
