Twitter pushes shopping: let companies sell products, compete with Facebook for social commerce market

Twitter said it will launch a new feature called Twitter Shops. Let businesses display up to 50 products on their web pages. It’s part of Twitter’s push to grab a piece of the $45 billion US social commerce market. Facebook and Instagram are leaders in social commerce, where merchants can open virtual stores and sell merchandise.

Twitter Shops is currently only open to select US merchants and is only visible to iPhone users of Twitter. After clicking the shopping icon on the merchant’s webpage, the user will be directed to the product catalog. After clicking a product, the user will jump to the merchant’s website and go shopping.

In recent months, Twitter has put more emphasis on shopping and commerce functions in order to expand new business and increase revenue beyond traditional digital advertising.

Last July, Twitter launched a feature called the Shop Module, which allows retailers to display five items on the page; last year, during the Christmas shopping season, Twitter and Walmart held the first e-commerce live broadcast event.
