Windows 11 users can now hold down Shift and right-click to call out the traditional menu

While the Windows 11 system introduces major design changes, it also means that many details are not perfect. One of the things that bother users in Windows is the right-click menu, and with just a few clicks, more than five different visual styles can be found with little in common. In Windows 11, Microsoft tried to bring a unified visual style with a modernized right-click menu, but the situation has only gotten worse.

Many applications do not support the new context menu, so users need to open two context menus to get the options they need (right-click to open the new menu, select “Show more options” to open the old menu). As an option, Microsoft allows pressing Shift + F10 to open the classic menu for the selected file or folder.

In Build 22572, Windows 11 still has a “two-tier menu” approach, but it’s now much simpler to invoke the classic variant. Instead of clicking “Show more options” or pressing Shift+F10, you can hold down the Shift key and right-click anywhere you want to directly open the traditional right-click menu.

Of course, the “dual menu” is still a compromise, but the latest improvements will make it easier for those who frequently use the old menus, especially on laptops and keyboards, where the F1-F12 keys require pressing the Fn key. Unfortunately, inconsistent design changes are still everywhere. Hopefully, Microsoft will work to alleviate this issue and make Windows 11 more visually appealing in future updates.
