Official confirms ProtonMail will have a desktop version, but it’s not ready yet

Proton has just confirmed what some ProtonMail fans and users would like to hear, such as a desktop application for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms in the works. Proton CTO Bart Butler shared the information in a blog post on Wednesday, outlining the new progress the company has made so far.

While this sounds like good news, since the project is still in the early stages of development and doesn’t even have a public beta version, don’t expect it to be available anytime soon.

  • We are experimenting with an Electron.js desktop application to enable ProtonMail to be used across Mac, Linux and Windows browsers.
  • Currently, the project is still in the early stages and there is not even a release schedule for the beta version or the official version.
  • But to be sure, the ProtonMail desktop app has been very vocal, so I’ll finally mention it.
  • Additionally, this blog post confirms that Proton Drive is coming to a Windows app later this year, as well as a mobile app for iOS and Android users:
  • Later in 2022, we’ll be releasing the Web Drive app on Windows, iOS, and Android.
  • As always, Proton Drive will be available in beta form first, and the full release will have to wait.
  • Finally, the beta test version of Proton Drive will have a free tier slot next week. For more details, please visit the official website.
