Linus Torvalds just released Linux 5.18-rc1, closing the two-week merge window for Linux 5.18 as the next major release of the Linux kernel. On a line-by-line basis, two areas stand out, namely the addition of AMD graphics drivers for the new hardware. Specifically the auto-generated header files for DCN 3.1.x and MP 13.0.x IP blocks.
They “absolutely dominate” the differences due to the plethora of new header files added for each new GPU. These additions in Linux 5.18 are in preparation for the upcoming Radeon GPUs, and now they are really enabled on a block-by-block basis.
Also, on the Intel side, an update to the Intel Performance Monitoring Events table also brought the most significant code difference, coming in second. Changes in AMD graphics and Intel CPUs lead the way byline count, but there are a ton of new features in Linux 5.18, which we’ll discuss separately later, because the other changes in Linux 5.18 are fairly scattered, about 60% of the 5.18 changes are In terms of driving.
