Mozilla and the visual effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic, have teamed up to develop a browser extension for the Firefox browser. The add-on called Extended Color Management is available as an open source project and unifies color calibration across different devices. By default, Firefox has so far relied on the color management of the operating system to optimize colors and images.
During the corona pandemic, the ILM studio was also made more difficult to work from home and the like. Especially since color calibration is essential when working with visual effects and in the home offices the media professionals worked on a wide variety of monitors. A uniform calibration was needed.
The add-on allows media professionals to disable the system’s color management to get consistent colors of graphics and videos across different operating systems. With the extension you can do this for the Firefox browser. In this way, it is also possible for partners to look at and check the unadulterated end result with precise colour. The browser and a well-calibrated monitor are then sufficient. There is no need to take into account the color management of various applications.
