Microsoft announced several new features for Windows 11, including new Snap Layouts gestures, folders in the Start menu, and tabs in File Explorer. feature, but this feature is still missing and will not be present in the 22H2 version of Windows 11.
The tabs feature in File Explorer is one of the biggest updates to Explorer in years. In addition to tabs, there are new sidebars and a darker dark mode. There’s also a new “Home” view to see recently used files, like pictures or videos, and integration with OneDrive.
Microsoft has confirmed that it’s still working on the tabs feature for File Explorer, but it won’t be coming to the Production build of Windows 11 version 22H2, which means tabs are still a long way off.
In response to a question about Windows 11’s File Explorer tab, Microsoft’s project manager reiterated that users may need to wait for the feature, and its arrival is full of uncertainty. This suggests that Windows 11 22H2 will not include tabs in File Explorer, but it is possible to enable the feature in the 22H2 version in the future through some cumulative or feature experience.
Users may still have to wait until later this year to try the feature, and there’s still no official word on when the tabs in File Explorer will appear in the Windows Insider program. According to sources, Windows 11 Build 22621 is an RTM (release to manufacturers) build of version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2), and the feature update is expected to roll out in the fall, with reports pointing to September or October.
