Sony: Supply issues eased, plans to expand PS5 production

SIE CEO said on Thursday that as the supply chain crisis eases, the technology giant plans to increase the production of PlayStation 5 game consoles. “Our PS5 production ramped up significantly this year, allowing us to close the gap with PS4,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said at an investor briefing.

The Sony PS5 was launched in November 2020, but the price has almost risen sharply due to shortages. Officials believe the supply shortage has disrupted the electronics industry, but it is expected to close the gap with the PS4 next year and surpass the PS4 installed base this year.

In addition to the initial growth, “we plan to significantly increase our mainframe production further, bringing our production levels to levels we’ve never achieved before,” Ryan said.

At the previous earnings conference, Sony said it hopes to sell 18 million PS5 game consoles this fiscal year to achieve further growth.
