Google Pixel 7: Same display as Pixel 6 but with some optimization

Let’s go back to the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, the two devices that will inaugurate the second generation of Made by Google smartphones equipped with the Google Tensor chipset.

According to the latest rumors, the next two Mountain View smartphones could host the same displays present on the two smartphones of the current generation, Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, while receiving some small optimizations.

The point of the situation

Let’s start from the beginning. On the occasion of the Google I / O 2022 , in addition to officially presenting the Google Pixel Buds Pro and the Google Pixel 6a , the Mountain View giant has previewed all the devices that will make up the renewed product portfolio of the Pixel range: among these devices, in addition to the long-awaited Google Pixel Watch and the mystery Google Pixel Tablet , include the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro .

On the two smartphones of the next generation Made by Google, we fully know the aesthetics and the colors in which they will be presented (in autumn) but, so far, as regards the technical specifications we have relied on rumors and rumors leaked over the last few months.

Google still has many details on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro to share with the community but, thanks to the 9to5Google portal, we get to know some information on the displays that the next top of the range will be equipped with, found within the AOSP code (Android Open Source Project).

Google Pixel 7: Same displays as the Pixel 6?

Both Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro use displays produced by Samsung and rather recent (but still inferior to those present on the smartphones of the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S22 series ), a 90 Hz Full HD AMOLED for the former and an AMOLED Quad HD a 120 Hz and curved at the edges for the second.

It appears that Google has created two new video drivers, one marked with the code C10 and the other with the code P10, referencing the Pixel 7 Pro’s Cheetah and Pixel 7’s Panther code names (and not the other way around as one might think in previously): from these files, it is possible to obtain some information on the displays of the two smartphones.

Google Pixel 7 will feature an AMOLED display with Full HD resolution in 20: 9 (or 1080 x 2400 pixels), capable of going to a maximum refresh rate of 90 Hz, while Google Pixel 7 Pro will have an AMOLED display with Quad HD resolution in 19.5: 9 (i.e. 1440 x 3120 pixels) with 120 Hz refresh rate.

Then looking at the names of the two files, it becomes even clearer that the Samsung panels in question are exactly the same, S6E3FC3 and S6E3HC3, of the predecessor’s Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. it is something still in development, it could make someone turn up their nose hoping for improvements on the display front for the next generation of smartphones.

From previous rumors, however, we know that Google Pixel 7 should be slightly more compact than the Pixel 6 (1 mm narrower and 2 mm shorter): this should turn into more optimized frames, for the same display.

As for Pixel 7 Pro, however, the smartphone could introduce a native 1080p mode (or resolution scaled to Full HD) with the aim of offering a “new” mode to save energy: this is not entirely surprising, since a similar possibility was discovered already in the beta 1 of Android 13 (aboard the Google Pixel 6 Pro ).

The news for the Pro model, however, may not be limited to the software: another driver, in fact, would suggest that Google has an almost identical display in store but marked by the serial number S6E3HC 4, perhaps of a more recent generation; to open this hope is the set of functions reported in the file, identical to those of the “old” display.

There is still a long time before the two smartphones become reality and, you know, the situation could evolve quickly and even completely upset. Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will arrive next autumn together with the new release of the Android operating system, probably in October 2022 like the predecessors, and will debut the second generation of the proprietary Google Tensor chip.
