Edge, Chrome PWA web applications will support the tab interface

According to the latest reports, Google will soon be in Windows 11, Windows 10 and other desktop platforms by adding a “tab” display mode/interface (ie tabs) to the Web application to upgrade the web application. The company dropped hints of the feature in a bug post filed in 2018 and is now planning to prototype the idea, according to a document found.

Google wants web applications to be as powerful as possible, and one way to achieve this is to make multitasking easier. All browsers have tabs, and it would make sense if the web application also supported them. Google believes that the tab display mode in web applications will allow users to access various features of the PWA without leaving the main window.

This can make copying, uploading, and navigating easier than with current web applications, where users rely on web browsers or other applications to perform certain tasks. In the current implementation, in a web application, if a link is clicked, the web application loses focus and the user is redirected to the browser.

With a “tabbed” interface or display, Google believes it may have behavior similar to a regular browser window. For example, a tab in a web application can open multiple documents from an index page.

Google is exploring support for a new display mode “tabbed” and a new variable “tab_strip” in the new manifest, which allows web applications.

Currently, PWAs in stand-alone windows can only have one page open at a time. Some apps expect users to have multiple pages open at once. The tabbed mode adds a tab strip to stand-alone web apps, allowing multiple tabs to be open at once, Google said in a statement. stated in a document.

In the code, the “home” tab refers to the web application’s main or pinned tab, which is always open when the web application is launched. If you click this pinned tab or a link in the home page, you will be directed to a new tab page. According to the company, new checklist fields allow for customizable labeling strips.

Google says “Apps can choose to customize the URL this tab is locked to and the icon displayed on the tab”. Additionally, the user agent can decide where to process these tabs to create new windows or combine them with browser tabs.

This feature is especially useful for productivity applications that allow editing of multiple documents at once and have a home tab (i.e. home page). For example, Office for Windows has a home page that includes links to documents and other features.

Likewise, Google’s web app with a tabbed interface can use the home tab as a menu to open existing files, and then all files will open in their own tabs.

According to a post on Google’s Chromium forums, Google will soon add this feature to the browser, and users can test it with the new flag “enable-desktop-pwas-tab-strip”. It is expected that this feature will also appear on the Microsoft Edge browser.

In addition to web application improvements, Google Chrome will also get modern smooth scroll bars on Windows 11 and Windows 10.
