Microsoft is removing some features in Excel due to low usage

Microsoft’s Excel is one of the largest spreadsheet software users, whether in the business field or personal field. While Microsoft regularly adds features to Excel, the company occasionally removes features. Microsoft is now announcing the end of support for three Excel features starting in June 2023. These features are for Microsoft 365 customers, so only users of the service are affected.

The first Excel feature to be removed is “Money,” a dynamic template that enables users to securely connect to their banking data and sync information directly. After June 30, 2023, it will no longer update users’ transaction data, and users will not be able to reconnect an existing financial account or connect to a new account.

However, users will be able to keep their current data, which Microsoft cannot access. Microsoft has advised people to use other advanced budget templates in Excel, or migrate to Tiller. The latter offers more functionality than Money in Excel, but also has an additional cost of $79/year (60-day free trial for Microsoft 365 customers).

Next is the cancellation of Wolfram data types. Microsoft announced a partnership with Wolfram a few years ago but has now decided it doesn’t want to renew it. Microsoft will now focus on its homemade solutions. Beginning June 11, 2023, refreshes of existing data types and connections to new data types will stop working. That is, the user’s existing data will not be deleted, just any longer connected to the Wolfram service.

Finally, Microsoft is also eliminating partner offers as the company looks to explore other areas where it can add value to customers. While Microsoft didn’t go into depth to provide more details, it said that if users sign up for an offer, they have until June 30, 2023, to redeem it, or it will be gone forever.

While Microsoft has disclosed some of the reasons for discontinuing the three features, the email to Microsoft 365 users also mentions, “Microsoft is committed to improving the user experience with Microsoft 365 subscriptions. As a result, we occasionally remove underused features.
