Samsung is said to be building the first cheap foldable

For a few years, foldable smartphones have offered a potential alternative to the traditional form factor. So far, however, the devices were only reserved for those who were willing to experiment with the appropriate change. This could change soon. Although you will still have to put a few bills on the table for the rumored upcoming Samsung smartphone, it will probably no longer come with a four-digit price point.

Samsung dominates the still young foldable market with its two device series Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip. Partly because, unlike the models from Oppo, Xiaomi and Huawei, they are among the few of their kind that is even sold outside of China. This year, the latest generations of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 will be added.

According to reports from the well-connected South Korean publication ET News, a foldable flagged Samsung Galaxy A is said to be in development. That’s a conscious decision to place it in the mid-range as an affordable alternative. Therefore, the assumed price of less than one million won, the equivalent of around 735 euros, sounds plausible.

Low price costs premium features

“The goal is to quickly increase Samsung’s foldable phone market share at competitive prices,” according to ET News. In return, however, some premium features will probably be dispensed with, although these are not named in detail. It’s not even clear which build – that of the Z Flip or that of the Z Fold – we can expect. Based on the fact that the Z Flip is the cheaper model and the screen area is significantly smaller, this variant sounds more likely.

We’ll probably have to wait a while before the Galaxy-A foldable is launched. This should not happen before 2024.
