Microsoft takes a step back: Macros on Office aren’t locked by default

Users who use the well-known Microsoft suite will be aware that in recent months the Redmond company had blocked macros on Office by default. This choice, which came after a long discussion with the community and industry experts, had not been well received by everyone, but essentially most users had accepted this compromise in exchange for a higher degree of security.

In the last year, Microsoft had repeatedly urged users to abandon macros by limiting their use as early as last January due to the high degree of malware diffusion (especially at the corporate level). Despite this, it seems that few have followed the advice (the majority?), Thus leading to the decision to block as the default setting.

A few months later, however, the company turns around and, without having made an official announcement yet, retraces its steps and re-enables macros on Office. Waiting for communication on the Microsoft blog, the only comment about it comes from Angela Robertson, who confirms the rollback on the Microsoft 365 Message Center.

Robertson apologizes for the change of course without warning and points out that the decision was nevertheless made on the basis of a lot of negative feedback received; more details will be shared later, but reading the reactions of users it can be said that criticism was not lacking even in this case.
