With the Android Tablet layout Google upgrades Gboard

A few weeks before Google announced that it will update above 20 of its first-party apps for large screens. Google has been rolling out large-screen-optimized UIs. With the Android tablet layout, the Gboard beta is now releasing. The company planned for this for a very long. Gboard 12.3 for Android brings a tablet layout that doesn’t look like the stretched-out phone keyboard.

If talking about the design of the Gboard getting taller by default, including the background and keys, now keys look like squares than rectangles. All this latest design enables easier to tap.

But, the touch targets get narrower in the portrait mode. Tab and Caps Lock keys show in the first two rows, at the left. For entering text and searching you can find at the right which shows as the pill. At the bottom-right corner is home to a dedicated Hide Keyboard button. For editing, there are Left/Right arrow keys with commas. emoji section is placed at the left of the space bar.

The company brought a changed, suggestions strip to allow for one more shortcut while the microphone button is not so right-aligned anymore. Gboard’s new tablet layout is so much more optimized for large screens after years of a phone-first UI.

Lastly, this is currently in the beta channel and will be available later. It means Google is updating the keyboard app for foldable in the past months. They also work on the Pixel Tablet.
