Google modifies Personal Safety with bottom bar now more app-like

Google has updated Personal Safety, which was previously just a feed, with a redesign of the bottom bar to make the experience feel more like an app.

The “Get help fast” section of the Home tab opens with tiles for Emergency sharing and Call 911 that look like the tiles in the Google Home app and Android’s Quick Settings. The next option is “Take action,” which will prompt you to add emergency contacts if you do not already have any, and “Be prepared,” which will instruct you on how to set up the safety check feature.

You can find the safety check and emergency sharing options under “Take action” once more in Features. Empowered capacities, similar to Emergency alarms, are noted under “Your elements,” while “Find” features what you don’t have turned on (e.g., Crisis SOS or Auto Accident Recognition).

Lastly, there’s the Your info tab organized by:

  • Emergency info: Medical information, Emergency contacts, Allow access to emergency info
  • Your videos
  • Help & support: Demos, Help, Send feedback

The notification bell icon in the app bar again prompts you to enable any disabled features. The app does not adhere to Dynamic Color, but there is a Material You bottom bar. Instead, the app uses its color scheme with pink and purple accents.

Google redesigns Personal Safety

Before this update, Personal Safety was merely a feed with actions that could be taken quickly. It’s currently more like an application, with this patch-up being truly necessary as Google has consistently presented greater usefulness.

This Personal Safety redesign is currently available on several Pixel phones running 2023.03.02.x.
