Gboard introduces innovative function for foldable devices

Gboard, renowned as one of the finest Android keyboards, has emerged as the default choice for Google Pixel and numerous Android users. Its diverse array of functionalities has also garnered appreciation from Apple enthusiasts. Recently, the keyboard has embraced enhanced flexibility, making it compatible with foldable devices – a flourishing sector propelled by industry giants like Samsung with their Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, alongside other prominent brands like OPPO. Moreover, the highly-anticipated release of the Google Pixel Fold promises to elevate the foldable device market by optimizing applications for this unique form factor.

In response to the demands of foldable device users, Gboard has already introduced a split view mode, designed to enhance ergonomics, especially on open folding screens. This feature splits the keyboard into two sections, effectively addressing the unique requirements of foldable devices. However, while this innovation has shown remarkable utility, it has also led to occasional typing errors, particularly due to duplicated keys like G and V.

Mindful of user feedback, the developers of Gboard have promptly responded to this issue. Subsequently, users will now receive a prompt suggesting the deactivation of duplicate keys through a toggle within the application’s settings, further refining the typing experience.

To access this feature, users can navigate to Gboard Settings > Preferences > Layout > Split Layout to include duplicate keys.

It’s important to note that the layout of the remaining keys will remain unchanged, with the space bar spanning the entire width of the keyboard. The keys in the two sections will continue to be evenly and equidistantly spaced to ensure an uncompromised typing experience, even with the removal of the G and V keys.

Moreover, the latest version of Gboard will be integrated by default on the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, enabling fortunate owners to immediately relish the benefits of improved ergonomics and typing precision.

While the precise release version or timing for this update is yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated to be available on various tablets and folding devices. Users are encouraged to ensure they have received the update or can manually update the app through the Google Play Store.
