Musk talks about self driving without radar

Tesla CEO Elon Musk believes that self-driving cars should use the same feeling as human drivers to drive cars. People rely on their eyes and intelligence to drive cars, and self-driving cars should also do so. Musk said in October that people rely on their eyes and biological neural networks to drive. Therefore, cameras and chip-based neural networks are the only way to achieve generalized autonomous driving.

Obviously, Musk implemented this idea in Tesla. The New York Times published an article on Monday that Musk had repeatedly instructed the Autopilot team that developed autonomous driving technology to abandon radar and use only cameras. Musk said that the reason for using this method is to focus on the data “presented” to the onboard computer. Tesla’s camera-based “vision” autopilot technology “is quite good. Adding radar data will allow the system to obtain more than necessary data, which will adversely affect the software.

According to the “New York Times” report, some Tesla engineers disagree with Musk’s view. They believe that the company’s autonomous driving technology should include radar, lidar and other perception technologies. Until earlier this year, Tesla’s autopilot system had included radar. Starting in May, Tesla will no longer deliver models that integrate hardware supporting radar technology. Almost all Tesla competitors, including Waymo and Audi, include radar, lidar and other sensor technologies in their autonomous driving systems.
